The Importance of Insuring a Teen's Health
Teenagers are probably the last to be concerned about their own health so it falls to their parents to take the actions that secure it. Instilling good habits and avoiding injurious ones is important, but so is preparing for the unexpected. This includes being quite sure that one has adequate health insurance for the whole family, including teens.
Teenagers are susceptible to a number of health endangering factors, but the primary one is accidental injury. Accidents account for the majority of health expenses in the teen years for a number of reasons. One is the independence and greater mobility that comes with getting older and having more autonomy. Teen drivers, for example, have many more accidents than do mature drivers.
Another factor is risk-taking behavior that also comes with the maturing process. Teens need to be insured because their own actions make them more vulnerable to injury and harm. Sports are another factor that involves many teens and carries the risk of injury and illness associated with that participation.
Teenagers often do not look very far into the future and do not see themselves as vulnerable so that they take risks most adults would avoid. They need health insurance because the costs of recovering from an accident can be staggeringly high. Accidents can be severe and require months if not years of rehabilitation that health insurance can help to cover.
While we don't like to think about it, teens also become ill with diseases as serious as cancer and diabetes and quality health care becomes a matter of life and death. Health insurance reduces the burden on the family and helps insure the best care available. Covering teenagers with health insurance is also important to cover chronic illnesses so that as adults they can continue coverage with their pre-existing conditions being provided for.
Teens seem naturally full of life and health, but we should never forget that good health can be fragile and can change in a heart beat. Teens require excellent health care insurance as part of good parenting.
